The Future of AI Computing Resides at the Edge

Dr. Douglas Comer, a distinguished professor of computer science at Purdue University, talked to the Forecast about findings in his 2021 book, The Cloud Computing Book: The Future of Computing Explained, for this article.

Generative AI and machine learning have strategists and decision makers working to figure out how they can put the technology to use. The hope is that integration of AI into their operations will improve their ability to translate big data into transformative business outcomes.

But there are some challenges. Challenges like finding talent who can put together the IT infrastructure to support the new digital capabilities. And the mountains of data that fuel AI require an IT infrastructure that can support it.

According to Comer, “That spells cloud computing,” he said. “Cloud data centers have lots of processing power and you can get as much as you want to pay for.”

The article also talks about edge computing as the better option for machine learning, given its speed and security—both critical when it comes to high-stakes decision making.
